Sir Garfield Barwick is one of a select few of High Court judges who had served in Federal Parliament before being appointed to the Court. Barwick is controversially remembered for his role in advising Governor-General Sir John Kerr during the 1974 Constitutional Crisis. Indeed, Marr's biography of Barwick is criticised for being an ideologically motivated attack on the character and work of Barwick because of his role in the dismissal. Marr is certainly unsympathetic, but conscious of Marr's partisan, it is a worthy read.
